Monica Byrne: "The Girl in the Road"

Fresh off  the success of her play, What Every Girl Should Know - one of the most anticipated shows presented at the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival - the Regulator is thrilled to welcome Durham-based playwright and novelist Monica Byrne to read from and sign copies of her new book, The Girl in the Road. A brilliant re-imagining of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey, The Girl in the Road is a fascinating exploration of our need to come to terms with our histories, and a poignant look at our ability to understand and convey emotional truth. When Meena, a young woman living in a futuristic Mumbai, wakes up with five snake bites to the chest, she isn’t sure who means her harm, she only knows that India is not safe for her.She decides to flee India and a trauma she can’t quite articulate, to return to Ethiopia, the place of her birth. Mariama, a girl from a different time, is on a quest of her own. After witnessing her mother’s rape, she joins up with a caravan of strangers heading across Saharan Africa, traveling to Ethiopia where she is told revolution is brewing, and life will be better. As one heads east and the other west, Meena and Mariama’s fates intertwine in ways that are profoundly moving and shocking to the core.
