A note on our new website feature...

We want to celebrate independent publishers at the New Regulator Bookshop! So we are inaugurating a new feature on our website. Every couple of months we will be highlighting one of the many amazing truly Indie presses around the country. We will feature their terrific titles in the store and rotate a selection of excerpts from some of their recent titles for you to get a flavor of their publications.

New Directions

Our fall featured publisher is New Directions. New Directions was founded in 1936, when James Laughlin (1914–1997), then a twenty-two-year-old Harvard sophomore, issued the first of the New Directions anthologies. “I asked Ezra Pound for ‘career advice,’” James Laughlin recalled. “He had been seeing my poems for months and had ruled them hopeless. He urged me to finish Harvard and then do ‘something’ useful.”

There is a bass-line that pulsates along the faults of this island, from the Blue Mountains to Santa Cruz, from Plantain Garden to Rio Minho; then travelling the coast, troubling the waters. They say each year the blue-green sea rises higher, pulled by the music of the people. Bass riddim moves underground and the sea lurches, dragging flotsam, broken shells, and ground hipbones. “Walk on the sand with reverence, hear?” These are the words I say to Anjahla. For the bones of our kin are in the waters – the grainy debris of slave cargo – fierce babymothers who jumped off the ships and into the ocean. They swallowed seawater but stayed strong inside.
