Beth Holmgren will read from and sign copies of her new book, Starring Madame Modjeska: On Tour in Poland and America, which traces Modjeska's fabulous life and career from her illegitimate birth in Krakow, her successive reinventions of herself as a star in both Poland and America, and her enduring legacy. Through extensive research on two continents Holmgren shows how Modjeska won renown as the greatest “American” Shakespearean actress of her day. Beth Holmgren is a professor in Duke's department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies.
