Start: 7:00 pm
Durham resident Jonathan Bloom will discuss and sign copies of his new book, American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It).  This eye-opening account of our culture of excess and waste examines where and why we waste food at all levels of the food chain and offers potential remedies.  Bloom has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Boston Globe. The price of admission?  A can of food—and the person who contributes the most will receive a free copy of the book.  All donations will be given to a local food distribution organization.
Start: 7:30 pm
2010-2011 U. S. Poet Laureate W. S. Merwin will read from his works, followed by a reception and book signing.  Merwin, the William Blackburn Visiting Poet at Duke, is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize (twice), the National Book Award, the Tanning Prize, the Bollingen Prize and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.  The reading is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.  Tickets can be picked up from the English department in the Allen Building beginning Oct. 25, or by emailing rebecca.gibson@duke.edu.  Remaining tickets will be distributed at the door.
